Toned-down Fashion Week this year |21 December 2020

A more tone-downed version of the illustrious Seychelles Fashion Week was organised yesterday afternoon at the ICCS, with the participation of six designers.

The third Seychelles Fashion Week was re-dubbed the Seychelles Night yesterday afternoon with a smaller budget and venue, but with the same enthusiasm.

Terry Carolla, the organiser, noted that the novel coronavirus had affected plans to hold the Fashion Week in mid-year, in June or July, and they were forced to scrap the event all together in March. Attempts to organise a virtual show was unsuccessful as international designers were also under lockdown and sponsorships dried up.

According to Mr Carolla, over 60 models and 15 designers would have participated in the 2020 Fashion Week if Covid-19 had not reared its ugly head. Nonetheless, with a ‘show must go on’ mindset Mr Carolla opted for a more modest show.

The designers who showcased their work yesterday were well-known Darren Esther with his Da Extra collection that infuses music with fashion; Ivan Capricieuse with locally made accessories, Natasha Laval with Nwadkoko accessories; Fina Zialor and Oushnajohn Labrosse with OJZ. Nigerian designer Nancy Iwauagwu, who had previously participated in the previous Seychelles Fashion Week, also had her designs modelled, even if she was not in Seychelles to attend the event. Designer from Praslin, Ousnajohn noted that her participation in the Seychelles Night was an opportunity to promote her OJZ collection as well as to promote buying locally. “OJZ Seychelles gives every woman a touch of elegance. The lingerie I showcased brings something different because I do not see many Seychellois designers creating lingerie. Even the leather bags and accessories are not that common, but it goes to show that we can create these things locally, so do buy local.” Fina Zialor, a past winner of the Fon Lanmal, said that she jumped on the bandwagon to participate in the fashion show with the aim of showcasing her designs in the only local fashion event for this year.

“My collection was inspired by tropical colours and our African, European and Asian heritage[…]Covid-19 had not affected my creative process, I was busy designing and doing other work during these time and was ready when I received the call for the show.” In between the fashion displays, a panel of experts discussed the local fashion industry and its potentials and challenges, financing in this industry and the impacts of Covid-19 on designers. The panellists included SFW organiser Mr Carolla, director of the Seychelles Institute of Art and Design (Siad) Christine Chetty, chief executive of Enterprise Seychelles Agency (Esa) Angelique Appoo and founder of clothing brand Seylingo, Ronny Julius.

The fashion show also saw performances by local singers Mia and Telsy. Will we see a fourth SFW next year? According to Mr Carolla, the answer is an affirmative yes. “We are definitely planning to organise a Seychelles Fashion Week in 2021 and we have already started negotiations with a lot of partners for that to happen. We are giving ourselves about a year to do it, and we are planning to do it in November, from the 24th onwards.” The Seychelles Night will be televised on SBC later this month.

Second Seychelles Fashion Week ‘A huge success,’ says organiser |02 December 2019

With the participation of 26 designers from across the globe – 15 more than in the first edition held last year – and a whopping 50 Seychellois models walking the catwalk with 10 international models, the second Seychelles Fashion Week has been described by its chief executive, Terry Carolla, as “a huge success”.

The second Seychelles Fashion Week kicked off on November 25 with various workshops, boot-camps and a business forum, and culminated with two fashion shows held on November 29 and 30 at the Eden Bleu Hotel.

It saw the participation of designers – with varying years of experience and qualifications – from Seychelles, the United States, Indonesia, Nigeria, Qatar, Malawi, Guyana, South Africa, India, Congo, Senegal, Namibia and Botswana.

Additionally, the fashion shows were filmed and will be broadcasted by international media outlets, World Fashion TV and Fashion TV Africa.

On Saturday evening, the night of the second show, Seychelles NATION met up with some designers backstage to find out more about their collections.

Lindiwe Gigaba, a fashion designer from South Africa with over 30 years of experience, brought a collection that had been inspired by the nature in her country and which supports her ongoing campaign against rhinoceros and elephant poaching.

“I am hoping to contribute towards preserving nature. My clothes are hand-painted; I did it all on my own and I also mentor young designers in South Africa, so they can learn how to do this type of designing,” she said. A great proponent of conservation, Gigaba revealed that it was Seychelles’ great efforts in protecting the environment that propelled her to participate in the Seychelles Fashion Week. She added that she loves all her pieces equally because they are all unique and each tells a different but nonetheless important story. Gigaba hosts her own fashion show in South Africa called Africa Fashion Alive, which provides exposures to upcoming designers and their brands – a show which she is bringing to the United States as from next year. Meanwhile, Botswana-based Abigail Resego presented a total of 10 designs under her brand ‘Funky Resy’, which she qualified as “a funky wear for women who want to stand out”. Her collection which graced the Seychelles Fashion Week’s catwalk had been inspired by the pearls of the sea. With only four years of experience, Resogo, has already shown her pieces in various shows in Botswana, Malawi, Namibia and, now, she gets to add Seychelles to this ever-growing list.

Young Seychellois designer, Darren Esther, who recently took part in the Accra Fashion Week, showcased 10 pieces designed especially with young, adventurous, outgoing and sexy females in mind. “These clothes are for girls who are daring with their sex appeal, and who are very keen to show it all: cleavage, legs and their curves,” Esther explained. Other design brands of the nights included Precious Lulu Couture, Regalia Design Studios, Del Africa Fashion House, Songwar, Dwico, Sluvin Designs, Mshade Design and Clavon Leonard. The night’s hosts were fashion designer Romeo Paul and top model and television host, Bettinah Tianah.

Giving an overview of the fashion show, Mr Carolla expressed that he was very satisfied with the outcome and noted that this year’s fashion show has set the standards extremely high for the third one, to be held next year. High praises went to his team who kept “everything on point” and all the hands working back-stage such as the makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers and videographers as well as the sound and lights crew.

The Seychelles Fashion Week was developed to create a platform on which local talents could emerge, allowing them to gain the necessary experience and confidence as well as to introduce fashion tourism as one of the possible ventures for the Seychelles market.

The accompanying photographs show some highlights of the fashion show on Saturday evening as well as the male and female designers.

Seychelles Fashion week 2018
Seychelles Fashion Week, a first for the island nation, opens in November

Seychelles News Agency) - Local models, designers and accessory makers are being called to come forward as Seychelles gears to host its first-ever fashion week.

The Seychelles Fashion Week will take place at the AVANI Seychelles Barbarons Resort and Spa in the western side of the main island of Mahe from November 29 to December 2.

Terry Carolla, the owner of the Telly’s Modelling Agency, is organising the event which he says is a historical event for the fashion industry of the country. The Fashion Week, which will bring around 20 designers under one roof on the island nation, is part of the 20th-anniversary celebration of Telly’s Modelling Agency.

Nine designers have already confirmed their participation, including designers from Seychelles, Qatar, Zambia, South Africa, Ghana and Pakistan.

“It is crucial to note that designers put together clothes for every body type, so the door is open for every Seychellois who would like to participate. We are especially calling on male models as there is a big gap in that area,” said Carola, the executive producer of the event.

Carolla is working closely with the Seychelles Tourism Board, which is responsible for bringing the international press to cover the event in the island nation.

The executive producer told SNA that some top magazines have already been identified. This will provide local designers with the opportunity to be exposed in the international press.

Carolla said that local designers should be aware that “during fashion weeks, international buyers are sometimes present. These are people who come to scout for new collaborations and inspiration, and have the potential to open new doors for designers.”

The face of Seychelles Fashion Week is Athaliah Samuel, a top model from Trinidad and Tobago, who was also Miss World Trinidad and Tobago 2012. Samuel is already advertising the Seychelles Fashion Week all over the world. During the event, she is expected to host a workshop with aspiring designers in Seychelles.

In putting the event together, Carolla felt that there was a need to attend other fashion weeks, from which he and his team could gather experience and learn what needs to be done to organise such an event.
